…“normality.” A paradigm reversal is under way. In the 1789 Declaration of the Rights of Man, liberty underpins the principles of security and equality. In the early modern political thought of Hobbes and Rousseau, liberty and security together fashion the social contract. Today, the principle of security is supposedly the sole ground of liberty. This conceptual reversal encourages an ideology of techno-security that affects the everyday environment and public space. This in turn forms the basis for a new architecture of criminal justice, for universal surveillance, for the definition of what counts as a suspicious activity, and for the prosecution

Beginning of the article…

This text is based on the lecture given by Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara, founders and directors of Grafton Architects, to the Société française des architectes on November 23, 2007, on their project for the recently completed extension of Bocconi University in Milan.

As architects who have spent most of our practicing lives in Dublin, the prospect of coming to a new city – Milan – and to construct a new building in a new place, where we were foreigners, was very challenging. Before commencing, it was important

…goes clearly beyond the freedom of the artist to create new forms. In other words, it is not simply the freedom to create forms, but rather something much broader that embraces art and what we might call for lack of a better term, the spirit of freedom. It was clearly what Malevitch found to be the spirit of his time, struggling for the complete conquest of reality. The free forms in his paintings, which in many ways mirror in the field of the plastic Filippo Marinetti’s Words in Freedom, are not only able to stand on their own but also…

…this controlling urge, despite the obstacles. Life continues to surge forth. Other worlds are emerging from dissident, resilient communities determined to inhabit natural environments in common, to cultivate links of dependence and attachment, to care for human beings and for the Earth. They constitute new beginnings.

The unstable, desolate landscape in the opening scene of Antonioni’s Il Deserto rosso distils the symptoms of the violent devastation of ecosystems by mechanisation and industrialisation. Does the destruction of pine groves around Ravenna represent an irrevocable loss of landscape or the deliberate exacerbation of…

n°17 Theory and Project

…a central though little explored topic in architecture and architectural theory, he makes us see Le Corbusier’s late work with new eyes: the topic in question is the underside, with all its implications for scale, program, form, and matter. Pierre Caye addresses the double life of theory, or rather the double use made of it: on the one hand, a palliative function that seeks to compensate for architecture’s powerlessness, and on the other the Word, whose task is to bring the act of construction to fruition.

The fruitful alliance between theory and the project can also be illustrated by

…material, constructed world, and hence also the practices and representations of human society. Modern politics has the same project; some modern architects have even believed that subversion in the sphere of politics paralleled the forms they explored. This connection cannot be implemented, in my view at least, except through a new alliance of politics, ethics, and culture of the kind that Gorbachev called for, a bitter acknowledgment of the flaws of the system that he sought to reform. The pursuit of this common project is what the title “Architecture and Politics” calls for. Voluntarism alone is not such a project,…

n°29 The European Dream

…Palladio as his starting point, he adopted a highly unusual viewpoint in exploring the meaning of European urban structures. The issue closes with the critical gaze brought to bear by Guillaume Hergat and Raphaël Lévêque on a selection of projects by the agency CITA, which sees social housing as a testing ground for new ideas. Our hope is that this text rouses our readers’ interest for typological knowledge, a taste for an analysis, and, for architects, the joy of doing so much so well with so little.

I want to defend the idea that architecture, as architecture, as the arche or the principle of construction, has a relation to space that is not one of representation but of configuration. Its meaning is not in the order of signs or images but of spatial operation, and for this reason it is unrepresentable. A building is a structure that withdraws, operating where a series

…closure. Far from defining itself as an originary, substantial unity, it is marked by alterity and plurality. In particular, the series of ancient terms formed upon oikos, which is particularly vast and diversified, is found, for instance, in the vocabularies of war, politics, and ethics.

What might one learn by trying to re-hear the rule of the house in eco-nomy, the science of inhabiting in eco-logy, a definition of the inhabitable earth in the oikou-menê? In these terms that we use today to think about production, society, nature, languages, and earth, what can be contributed by a reactivation of…
